1. How does the SOB copper sleeve lubricate itself?

 

On the copper alloy substrate (usually high-strength brass or tin bronze), graphite columns of high purity are embedded in a certain pattern. When the shaft rotates within the copper sleeve, the friction heat causes the graphite to slightly disintegrate, forming a solid lubricating film on the friction surface.

 

This layer of film acts as if the direct friction between metals is transformed into the friction between graphite and metals. The friction coefficient drops from 0.2-0.3 between metals to 0.06-0.12.

Without disassembling the machine, check three signals:

Once these occur, it indicates that the graphite layer has worn to the limit and replacement is needed.
