Why Injection Cylinders Lose Accuracy Over Time (And How a Simple Bushing Fix Helps)
Anyone running injection molding knows the cylinder is the heart of the machine. It handles massive pressure thousands of times per day, year after year. That kind of workload takes its toll from the inside out.
Wear Starts Internally
The bushings and guide components inside the cylinder act like train tracks, keeping the piston moving in a straight line. But with constant high-frequency motion, metal grinds against metal. The clearance between parts grows-maybe just a fraction of a millimeter at first, but eventually it causes real problems:
Inconsistent shots – positioning errors lead to flash or short shots
Unstable movement – the piston wobbles instead of moving smoothly, causing speed fluctuations
More noise and vibration – loose clearances create metal-on-metal knocking and hydraulic leakage sounds
Experienced operators can hear when a cylinder has gone "loose" just from the sound of the machine.
Refurbishment Doesn't Mean Replacement
Many shops assume they need a whole new cylinder when performance drops. Often, they don't. In many refurbishment projects, replacing the bronze bushings is the critical fix.
Bronze wears well, self-lubricates, and handles heat-ideal properties for this job. The process is straightforward: disassemble, measure, press in new bushings, hone to spec, replace seals, reassemble.
Real Results You Can Feel
After the swap, the improvements are noticeable:
No more piston wobble-guidance is restored
Reduced friction slows down future wear
The entire cylinder assembly gains years of additional service life
Bottom Line
Sometimes performance drops not because the machine design is obsolete, but because a key component has simply reached its wear limit. Like putting new brake pads on an older car-no major overhaul needed. Identify the problem, install the right part, and the machine comes back to life.
